In the summer of 2009, The Residents made three decisions. One was to clean house. This decision led to the release of the futurist compilation CD, Ten Little Piggies. Second was the realization that the best statement of their current self view was a bunch a recordings that had been recorded earlier for an album called The Voice of Midnight. This decision led to the release of the album, The Ughs!

The third decision was to play a new live show on Halloween. This was to be the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and directions. The show was never announced but it was booked for the Rio in Santa Cruz, The Residents home-away-from-home, for Saturday, October 31.

=====
They couldn’t quite get it together by October 31 and then the holidays arrived. The Halloween show was postponed but is finally making it to the Rio January 23rd, 2010. The show is called Talking Light.

The story of the Talking Light piece is basically that of an older man who questions, not only decisions he made as a teenager, but also if the events he remembers from that time happened at all. “A dead infant clutching a ring with an inscription the teenager cannot read” is the stuff of dreams. The following stories in the show may or may not shed light on the inscription. Questions remain unanswered. The Residents study death, not as a horrific end, but as the ultimate question that we all ask while wondering if any of it is even real.

    At the risk of feeding into your pathetic attention grab, consider this: Maybe you should stick to relating opinions you’re actually qualified to to give. Like the comparing the new Dominos pizza versus the old… something like that.

    God herself took Snakefinger at a young age because she wanted geetar lessons. Nobody can compare to Snakefinger, NOBODY. that being said, Bob on guitar was kick ass. He has his own style and makes no attempt to copy Snakefinger. From my perspective at the Austin show, Bob on guitar was mind blowing. Randy is 65 and out on an international tour. That’s brass. Chuck over there on keyboards….. words can’t even describe him, I won’t try.

    @siys – Did cook …
    @siys – Did cook pee in your cheerios? :) Sounds like you have personal issues against cook anyways. For me even though I love Cook’s (Loved Demons Dance Alone tour!) guitar playing, I have never thought of residents as a guitar oriented band, or even a band I listen to for specific riffs etc. It plays more of a role as keyboard/noise in the rez band is what I notice.

    Sounds like you just no longer like the rez, and that’s fine. There’s a time to move on for some.

    Rez is still like no other

    I have been a …
    I have been a Residents fan for 33 years, have everything they have ever released and then some, and seen all tours through Icky Flix, except the Mole Show. I loved the 13th Anniversary Show so much I flew to another city to see it again and one of the absolute highlights was seeing Snakefinger, as he was phenomenal. Opinions are subject and I am not saying my opinion is the only one, but Cook isn’t fit to even be considered a guitar player compared to Snakefinger. I love all music, sans Cook!

    @siys – Everyones a critic :) I for one love Nolan Cook’s style, just as I loved Snakefinger who had a unique signature sound in similar fashion. If Residents are not living up to your expectations, maybe you need to remember not to have any expectations when it comes to the rez :)

    I saw them twice, in Santa Cruz and in San Diego. The San Diego show was even better than this one I think! I put the stories up because they are newest (and weirdest). They did plenty of older material as well

    Pure crap! This …
    Pure crap! This storytelling phase has been a huge disappointment. Even as performance art this is extremely weak. Nolan Cook is one of the worst guitar players I’ve ever heard and I am not alone in this opinion. His one-dimensional everything-sounds-the-same style is intolerable. Homer Flynn has lost his flair and sings with a total lack of passion. Hardy Fox should continue as a solo act or the one remaining Resident, as he is the only one with loads of talent and something worth listening to.

    Yes!!! It was over too soon, but yes, it was incredible. It was great to see them again. I was sorry to see Carlos gone though I’ve heard he formed an avant-garde mariachi band in Mexico. Damn, I love the Residents!

    nope I would say …
    nope I would say you were just super lucky. Sorry to hear about the sound quality, sucks… have you checked the soundboards on the residents website? They were planning to sell each night on the site. It usually has samples too, so if its better quality, may be worth the purchase for the memory and a better version of audio. Could be bad too though…

    Anyways I saw them in San Jose and San Diego (California) and Molly was not at either show,

    Just got back from the Atlanta show. Been a fan for over 20 years and waited as long for a glimpse. Worth the drive and the ticket price but wish the sound quality had been better. Molly Harvey popped in for one song ‘The Old Woman’ off Gingerbread Man.

    Saw them in Chicago …
    Saw them in Chicago for Wormwood in 1999. Going tomorrow (02-03-10) for the Dallas show. The Granada has been running an ad for about three weeks now saying it’s a 3-4 hour show. I know this is probably an error as I have called and inquired about this and they seem to have no clue. But they haven’t changed the ad and I’ve brought it to their attention more than once. Anyway, looking forward to this show…had the tickets since mid-December. Go see the show…Kula Bocca says so!

    Looks completely nuts, I am going to the Dallas show tomorrow night. I am looking forward to it.

    @bweita – definitely very different, more like some of the oldest stuff. Some great songs from throughout the catalogue too! Definitely recommend going if you love anything from the mole trilogy to cube e

    @wikiwiki96 – Well …
    @wikiwiki96 – Well most of the in-between banter and even the renditions of the songs differed. The songs mostly the same, but it is composed and mostly improvised on stage. So you get nice new guitar solos and tidbits, different crazy things from the mouth of the rez etc. SImilar or same setlist, but just improvised/setup slightly different. It will surely just get better and better every show!

    @Paulie88 – This is …
    @Paulie88 – This is true, most often it is the band/staff asking if they can play and booking the gigs. I think if the residents ask to play your venue, not too many venue would ever turn it down so most likely its the REZ choice not to play there. Also they are getting up there in age! Tours may not be as lengthy, and finally a very important detail, they need a theater environment for their stage show. So no small nightclub etc. will do, and theaters often are occupied weeks for plays etc.

  22. wikiwiki96 Says:

    @pansatyrson They (as any touring band) will play where they’re hired to play, if it works in with the schedule. If they don’t hit a certain area, it means there was no offer, and/or couldn’t fit in with the existing schedule as planned via other offers.
