That's all I understand about curved space. Your friendly neighborhood physics major hopefully will be able to tell you more. The three-lines thing suggests height, width, and depth. It also suggests three ways of perceiving reality: seeing it, feeling it, and breaking it down logically. The fog thing reminds us that our individual knowledge is limited. I have watched every youtube video/looked at every guide for the quest but nothing will move the beams. I really hope they recognize this glitch and will fix it in an upcoming/soon patch. On mine, it worked the first time I can speculate it is either a glitch for some reason with a chance of happening that seems unfixable, or it's a glitch caused when you save and reload in the observatory.
