Jungleland (movie)

(See lyrics below)
The incredible epic by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. One of my all time favorite songs.

I’ve tried to make a video to this very visual and poetic song – so I’ve included the lyrics so you can better understand what I’m trying to portray.

Jungleland

The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey State Line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane

Well the Maximum Lawmen run down Flamingo
Chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl
And the kids round there live just like shadows
Always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails
Tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand
Down in Jungleland

The midnight gang’s assembled
And picked a rendezvous for the night
They’ll meet ‘neath that giant Exxon sign
That brings this fair city light
Man there’s an opera out on the turnpike
There’s a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops
Cherry Tops
Rips this holy night
The street’s alive
As secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanish unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades
Hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted
Explode into rock’n'roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street
Down in Jungleland

In the parking lot the visionaries
Dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing
To the records that the DJ plays
Lonely-hearted lovers
Struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on
Just one look
And a whisper, and they’re gone

Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender
In a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal
And then surrender
In the tunnels uptown
The Rat’s own dream guns him down
As shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches as the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light

Outside the street’s on fire
In a real death waltz
Between what’s flesh and what’s fantasy
And the poet’s down here
Don’t write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of a knife
They reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded
Not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

I can say, without a doubt, that this is my favorite song. Ever. Sometimes, I go awhile, it’s sitting in the back of my head, I turn it on for a second, and suddenly I’m listening to it for hours, over and over again, and that’s the beauty of the song. It conveys a sense of loss and hopelessness we’ve all felt at one point or another. Your video of this song is better than just about every music video I’ve ever seen, and the best part, by far is Clarence’s solo.

    The song that …
The song that reminds me of “West Side Story” is “Incident on 57th Street,” one the few songs written by Bruce, or anyone, that is in a league with Jungleland. Both songs are, IMO, better than any song in West Side Story, and there’s some great music in that classic.

Bruce could easily write musical theater on a par with the greats of that genre.

“Streets of Philadelphia,” which won the Academy Award for Best Song, put him in the same elite group as Over the Rainbow. He’s a talent, for sure.

This is my favorite song of all time. Whenever I heard it I always imagine the life of a city (particularly New York) at night with gang trials and people trying to attain their dreams and other similar things. It is very similar to West Side Story so in your video where you have footage of that and then Bruce and E Street playing, it’s very fitting. Job well done!
